If you have an asphalt driveway and don't want it breaking down easily over the years, you can apply a sealcoat and thus safeguard it from all kinds of damage. You'll have success with this asphalt renovation if you do a couple of things.

Pressure Wash the Surface

There most likely are dirt and debris on your asphalt driveway currently. They may seem minor, but you don't want them being present when you go to apply a sealcoat because they'll interfere with the consistency and overall results you're able to get.

You can easily remove these things by pressure washing the driveway's surface. You can do this yourself by renting out a pressure washer or hiring a professional company. Then once the surface of your asphalt driveway is clean, you can feel good about having better success with whatever sealcoat product you've selected.

Apply in Thin Layers

Once your asphalt driveway is cleaned and potentially restored, you're ready to start applying your selected sealcoat product. A good tip to remember is to apply thin layers at a time because this is going to help the sealcoat dry a lot easier.

You can apply as many layers of sealcoat as you want, but achieving thin layers with each application is paramount to having better results. After each layer dries out fully, you can assess the results and decide if you want to add more or not.

Avoid Going Near the Driveway Immediately After Installation

Once you've properly seal-coated your asphalt driveway with multiple layers of this product, it needs to be left alone for a couple of days. This is the only way you're going to get great-looking results that are structurally sound too.

You can do a couple of things to ensure no one goes near the driveway while the sealcoat is drying out. For instance, you can set up barriers around the driveway. Then everyone will see that you're having work done and to avoid going near the driveway. Or you could put out some cautionary tape. Just try to limit traffic around the driveway until the sealcoat has cured effectively.

A lot of homeowners decide to sealcoat asphalt driveways because it makes them far more durable, saving them repair costs and ample maintenance work. You can sealcoat your own driveway with success too if you just use the right sealcoat product and apply it using proper protocols that you hopefully research in advance.
